So what made the funnyman, who currently is promoting his new NBC show, “The Marriage Ref,” laugh?
“Great jokes, beautifully delivered,” he said. “A very simple, but difficult thing.”
“They had a good relationship together,” Tom Papa, the actual “Marriage Ref” chimed in. “You don’t see comic duos very much any more and to see these two guys just out of the black have this kind
of self-deprecating, teasing relationship, they were great.”
And the two men agreed there was one joke in particular that killed it.
“I loved the Dame Helen Mirren joke too, that was one of my favorites. I loved the ‘Alec gives Steve the flower,’ intro and Steve says, ‘and Alec Baldwin’ — that was hilarious,” Jerry said. “And
the Christoph Waltz, Nazi-hunting Jews and they gestured to the crowd was another killer.”
With all the talk of Oscars, Billy had to ask Jerry if he’d ever consider the hosting gig.
“No,” Jerry said flatly.
“Why?” Billy asked. “Too much pressure?”
“Well, I’ll tell you what, this is the team that I want to see here for the next five years, first of all. And second of all, it’s a very difficult thing to do. That’s another reason I was so
impressed by it,” he said.
